Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions Recipe

Ingredients

  • For the Beef Marinade:

    • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
    • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
    • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • For the Stir-Fry:

    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for cooking)
    • 1 medium onion, sliced
    • 1 bell pepper (red, green, or yellow), sliced
    • 1-2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced (optional)
  • For the Sauce:

    • 1/4 cup soy sauce
    • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (optional)
    • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or cooking wine
    • 1 tablespoon sugar
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef:

    • In a bowl, combine the sliced beef, soy sauce, cornstarch, and vegetable oil. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 15-30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:

    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), rice vinegar, sugar, sesame oil, black pepper, and the cornstarch-water mixture. Set aside.
  3. Cook the Beef:

    • Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes until browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Stir-Fry the Vegetables:

    • In the same skillet, add a little more oil if needed. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers, and stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes until they are tender-crisp. Add the minced garlic and ginger (if using) and stir-fry for an additional 30 seconds.
  5. Combine and Sauce:

    • Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and vegetables, stirring to combine. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens and everything is heated through.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve the sizzling pepper steak hot, ideally on a sizzling plate if you have one. It can be served with steamed rice or noodles.

Tips:

  • Sizzling Plate: If you want to serve it on a sizzling plate, preheat the plate in the oven or on the stovetop, then add a little oil before placing the stir-fried beef and vegetables on it. The oil will create a sizzling effect.
  • Vegetable Variations: Feel free to add other vegetables like broccoli, snap peas, or carrots for more color and nutrition.
  • Spice Level: If you like it spicy, you can add sliced jalapeños or a dash of chili sauce to the stir-fry.
