Homemade Toffee Recipe

Posted on January 5, 2025

Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for Homemade Toffee! This buttery, crunchy treat is perfect for snacking, gifting, or using as a topping for desserts.

Homemade Toffee Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate, if preferred)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as almonds, pecans, or walnuts) – optional

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Sheet:

    • Line a baking sheet (about 11×17 inches) with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. This will prevent the toffee from sticking.
  2. Melt the Butter:

    • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the granulated sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Stir to combine.
  3. Cook the Mixture:

    • Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Once it reaches a boil, stop stirring and let it cook until it reaches a deep amber color, about 300°F (150°C) on a candy thermometer. This should take about 10-15 minutes. Be careful not to let it burn.
  4. Add Vanilla:

    • Once the toffee reaches the desired temperature, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Be cautious, as the mixture may bubble up.
  5. Pour the Toffee:

    • Immediately pour the hot toffee onto the prepared baking sheet. Use a spatula to spread it out evenly if needed. Let it cool for about 5 minutes.
  6. Add Chocolate:

    • While the toffee is still warm, sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the top. Let them sit for a minute or two to soften, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
  7. Add Nuts (Optional):

    • If you’re using nuts, sprinkle them over the chocolate layer while it’s still warm, pressing them down gently to adhere.
  8. Cool and Break:

    • Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature. Once cooled, you can break it into pieces. If you want to speed up the cooling process, you can place it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  9. Store:

    • Store the toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Tips:

  • Candy Thermometer: Using a candy thermometer is highly recommended for accurate temperature readings. If you don’t have one, you can test the toffee by dropping a small amount into cold water; it should form a hard, brittle ball.
  • Flavor Variations: You can experiment with different types of chocolate (dark, white, or flavored) and nuts to customize your toffee.
  • Gifting: Toffee makes a great gift! Package it in a decorative box or jar for a thoughtful homemade treat.

Enjoy your Homemade Toffee! It’s a delightful treat that’s sure to impress family and friends!
