Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. Cream the Butter and Sugars:

    • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract together until creamy and well combined.
  3. Add Eggs:

    • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until fully incorporated.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients:

    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Mix Dry Ingredients into Wet:

    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  6. Add Chocolate Chips:

    • Fold in the chocolate chips and nuts (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  7. Scoop the Dough:

    • Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake:

    • Bake in the preheated oven for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown but the centers are still soft. They will continue to cook slightly after being removed from the oven.
  9. Cool:

    • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. Serve:

Tips:

  • Storage: Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. You can also freeze cookie dough balls for later baking; just add a couple of extra minutes to the baking time if baking from frozen.
