Posted on January 16, 2025

Certainly! Here’s a detailed recipe for Carne Guisada (a flavorful beef stew) along with instructions for making flour tortillas to serve alongside it.

Carne Guisada Recipe

Ingredients

  • For the Carne Guisada:
    • 2 pounds beef chuck or stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 1 medium onion, chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 bell pepper (green or red), chopped
    • 2 medium tomatoes, diced (or 1 can of diced tomatoes)
    • 2 cups beef broth (or water)
    • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
    • 1 tablespoon chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • 2 bay leaves
    • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

1. Brown the Beef:

  • In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef cubes in batches, browning them on all sides. Remove the browned beef and set it aside.

2. Sauté the Vegetables:

  • In the same pot, add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

3. Add the Remaining Ingredients:

  • Return the browned beef to the pot. Add the diced tomatoes, beef broth, cumin, chili powder, paprika, oregano, salt, pepper, and bay leaves. Stir to combine.

4. Simmer:

  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender and the flavors have melded together. Stir occasionally and add more broth or water if needed.

5. Adjust Seasoning:

  • Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt and pepper if necessary. Remove the bay leaves before serving.

6. Serve:

  • Serve the Carne Guisada hot, garnished with fresh cilantro if desired, alongside warm flour tortillas.

Homemade Flour Tortillas Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (optional)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening or lard (or unsalted butter)
  • 3/4 cup warm water

Instructions

1. Mix the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder (if using). Add the shortening or lard and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may need to adjust the amount of water slightly.

2. Knead the Dough:

  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes until smooth. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for at least 15-30 minutes.

3. Roll Out the Tortillas:

  • Divide the dough into 8-10 equal pieces and shape them into balls. On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle (about 8-10 inches in diameter).

4. Cook the Tortillas:

  • Heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30-60 seconds on each side, or until lightly browned and cooked through. Keep the cooked tortillas warm in a clean kitchen towel while you cook the remaining tortillas.

5. Serve:

  • Serve the warm flour tortillas alongside the Carne Guisada.

Enjoy!

This hearty Carne Guisada paired with homemade flour tortillas makes for a delicious and comforting meal. Enjoy your cooking!
