Buttermilk Biscuits Recipe

Posted on April 27, 2025

Here’s a classic recipe for fluffy and delicious buttermilk biscuits. These biscuits are perfect for breakfast, as a side dish, or even for making biscuits and gravy!

Buttermilk Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (plus extra for brushing)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

3. Cut in the Butter:

  • Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

4. Add Buttermilk:

  • Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently with a fork until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.

5. Turn Out the Dough:

  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough 2-3 times until it comes together. Pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick.

6. Cut the Biscuits:

  • Use a floured biscuit cutter (or a glass) to cut out biscuits from the dough. Press straight down without twisting to ensure they rise properly. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, close together for soft sides or spaced apart for crispier edges.

7. Brush with Buttermilk:

  • Brush the tops of the biscuits with a little extra buttermilk for a golden finish.

8. Bake:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.

9. Serve:

  • Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with butter, jam, or gravy!

Tips:

  • Storage: Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. They can also be frozen for longer storage; just reheat in the oven when ready to serve.
  • Variations: You can add herbs, cheese, or spices to the dough for different flavors. For example, cheddar cheese and chives make a delicious combination!

Enjoy your homemade buttermilk biscuits!
