  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients:

3. Add Currants:

4. Combine with Buttermilk:

  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Mix gently until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.

5. Shape the Dough:

  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf. Place it on the prepared baking sheet.

6. Score the Top:

  • Using a sharp knife, score a deep cross on the top of the loaf. This helps the bread cook evenly.

7. Bake:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

8. Cool and Serve:
